How beauty brands from Covergirl to MAC are inspiring confidence (and cashing in) on National Lipstick Day. Plus some formulations to inspire your next launch.

Put on some lipstick and pull yourself together. It’s National Lipstick Day!
We can thank beauty icon Elizabeth Taylor for these famous words of wisdom on this Motivation Monday. But more than that, women everywhere are rejoicing in the power of lipstick on one of the most anticipated days of the year for makeup fans. Beauty businesses are cashing in on National Lipstick Day with deals galore on an endless medley of gorgeous hues from Estée Lauder-owned MAC to Coty’s Covergirl.
Beauty enthusiasts’ trusty little twist-up stick has transcended generations to paint the signature looks of Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Courtney Love Cobain and Taylor Swift, among countless other influential figures in the worlds of beauty, fashion, culture and politics. In serving as a badass accessory, lipstick is lending itself to being the confidence booster that is giving more women a voice.
Find Your Fabulosity, a nonprofit organization founded by Sheryl Kurland in 2016 to gift victims of domestic violence lipsticks and well wishes, surpassed a donation milestone this year: 100,000 lipsticks given to women in need.
Here’s how leaders in the market are marking the day:
Covergirl’s new vegan lip color range offers 24 pink, nude, plum and red satin finish shades made with minimal ingredients for clean, lightweight color.
The creamy, full coverage formula is said to instantly fill, even and smooth the appearance of lip lines. A moisture complex of 3% squalane, avocado and aloe butter keeps lips feeling hydrated all day. Made with no animal by-products, the carmine-free formulation uses synthetic and naturally derived red pigments to achieve its vivid shades. The full coverage formula provides lasting color sans smudging, bleeding, feathering or patchiness for a near-perfect pout.
“As the leader in committed beauty, our goal is to offer high-performance products that also inspire consumers to make choices that are better for us and our planet,” said Mary Santangelo, senior vice president, Covergirl, global marketing, Coty. “That is why we challenged ourselves to formulate a new collection of lip products that would deliver rich, luscious color without using any animal by-products, specifically Carmine. This beautiful range of shades flatters all skin tones and provides bold, lasting color in an eye-catching package. We say this is color truly made better.”
Rimmel London doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to packing on the pigment. The Coty-owned brand’s Stay Matte Liquid Lipsticks provide high-intensity color with a velvety matte finish that is kiss-, touch- and waterproof.
What’s more, makeup wearers won’t need a touch-up with the brand’s Lasting Finish Lipsticks, which provide long-lasting color with creme, satin and shimmer finishes available in a variety of shades.
Donned by Dua Lipa and Lil Nas X, Yves Saint Laurent’s Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick, introduced last year, has become eye candy to beauty lovers. This past spring, YSL introduced a follow-up product— a lipstick-oil hybrid called Loveshine that’s available in 20 buildable shades. Touting 24-hour hydration with six signature oils, the YSL Loveshine Lip Oil Stick is enhanced with rich fig pulp that helps lips look plumped and yield a creamy, wet shine.
Crayons aren’t just for children. Adults have a canvas, too. And for beauty enthusiasts, it’s their faces.
New from Ilia Beauty is a Lip Sketch Hydrating Crayon. It aims to give lwearers visibly fuller, more defined lips. The crayon – which is available in 12 shades and delivers rich color for 12 hours – is packed with hydrating ingredients such as sea succulent, hyaluronic acid, rosehip oil and seaweed extract.
Equipped with a sharpener, Ilia Beauty’s Lip Sketch Hydrating Crayon is used much like coloring a picture: first line the Cupid’s bow and outer lips and then shade them in for all-over pigment, according to the brand.
The 12 shades range from pink to red, nude, brown and purple and include: Banquette; Earthen; Blue Note; Gala; Case Study; Genre; Kiln; Piazza; Night Bloom; Pink Door; Pampas; and Rhyme.
Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty also debuted its first lip liner this summer, the Trace’d Out Lip Pencil. The liner comes in 10 universal shades of neutrals, reds and berries to match Fenty Beauty lip colors. The packaging is shade-matched, and the pencil can be sharpened for precise application.
Creamy, waterproof and transfer-resistant, the liners set onto the lips like a liquid creating a velvet-matte finish that will not smudge or feather. The color is designed to last eight hours and includes the following hues: The MVP, blue-red; Riri, rose mauve; Thugz Blush Too, dusty rose; Satin Panty, warm peachy pink; Pnut Butta, light beige; Rubbabandz, warm tan; Extra Thigh, cool brown; I Woodn’t, neutral brown; Brown’d Out, rich brown; and Coal Blooded, black brown.
The Estée Lauder Companies-owned MAC is celebrating National Lipstick Day by offering consumers deals on popular lip products. For example, shoppers can choose a free fan favorite nude lipstick – Lustreglass in “Like I Was Saying,” Cremesheen in Crème in Your Coffee and Satin in Spirit – with any purchase. And on orders of at least $90, shoppers can get a free full-size Lipglass.
With the 2024 Olympics just days away, athletes will be sporting makeup that stays locked in place to keep them looking as good as they feel on the athletic turf.
Varsity Beauty’s Ready Set Red Liquid Lip is designed with the makeup-wearing athlete in mind. The stain-resistant, quick-dry liquid lip product was introduced last year by Varsity Beauty – one of the first beauty lines designed by athletes specifically for athletes.
Developed by Varsity Spirit, the product line is built for high-impact, long-wear performance, ensuring sweat and transfer resistance that lasts.
